About This Video

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Divers Ready—my name is James, and in this Quick Tips episode I’m breaking down Goodman handles for beginners: what they are, why you’d use one, and how to actually set one up on your primary dive light. A Goodman handle (named after OG cave diver Bob Goodman) lets you mount your light on the back of your hand so your fingers stay free for reels, clips, valves, or whatever the dive throws at you. The whole goal is hands-free control without sacrificing a solid, stable beam. I compare soft Goodman handles versus hard Goodman handles, because both have real pros and cons. Soft handles are quick to adjust (especially if you switch between bare hands and gloves) and they pack down nicely into a thigh pocket. Hard handles are more “set-and-forget,” but they’re bulkier and usually need a Phillips screwdriver to resize—however they’ll last basically your entire diving life. I also cover practical stuff like making sure the fit is snug (a loose handle wobbles and can even fall off), how to clip them off with a double-ender, and why I strongly recommend buying the same brand handle as your light. Cheap universal bungee-style options? One star, would not recommend.
