I’m fresh back from DEMA Show 2025 in Orlando, where I went around asking the tough questions to important people (yes, I did ask why it took Shearwater so damn long to put GPS on stuff). In this video I break down my 8 biggest takeaways on where scuba is heading, and honestly… it looks weird in the best way. The show floor footprint might be shrinking year-on-year, but a few brands are clearly going from strength to strength, and that tells you a lot about what divers are actually excited about. Dive Rite is still refusing to sit still—constant refinement, right down to improving “basic” bits like D-rings, plus updates across lights, reels, harness hardware, and drysuits. Avelo is absolutely not a fad, and I’ll say it again: don’t knock it till you try it. They’re growing fast (now 61 centers), launching an entry-level course for brand-new divers, and the Shearwater x Avelo Jetpack collaboration is massive—Shearwater’s first non-computer product, built with the same simple/powerful/reliable philosophy. On top of that, Shearwater finally brought GPS in a clever way (Swift GPS transmitter + firmware updates), Trim Dive is apparently a real thing, Stream2Sea want your wetsuit to smell less like sadness, and there’s even talk of defog becoming a thing of the past.
