YouTube, what’s going on man—today I’m making a sample beat for Nine Vicious in FL Studio. A lot of y’all told me to check him out, so I did my homework for a couple days and noticed his producers really sample anything into a beat. I normally don’t sample like that because I like making my own melodies, but for this one I wanted to lean into that sound and take you through the whole process. I start by picking the right record (that part matters more than anything with these beats), then I find clean loop points and build out multiple chops so I’m not looping the same 4–8 bars the whole time. I show how I render chops fast, how I look for sections that share the same bass notes so the arrangement stays consistent, and a crazy FL trick: extracting stems from the sample. After that, I get into removing the bass using polarity (flip the phase on the extracted bass so it cancels out), then I slow the sample down by doubling BPM and stretching it to get that extra sampled feel—plus a little vinyl noise to make it nasty. From there it’s drums time: hats, my touch snare, open hats, and a fog 808 with glide. I also show a quick way to detect the sample’s root notes in Edison (detect pitch regions), so the 808 actually follows the sample instead of guessing.
