YouTube, what’s going on? In this video I’m doing a follow-up to my first underground beat from scratch, because y’all went crazy on that one and left me a ton of recommendations. One name I kept seeing was Slayr, so I went and listened to some of his albums and then I challenged myself to try making a Slayr type beat in FL Studio. I’m still pretty new to the underground sound, so I’m keeping it real the whole time—take what I’m saying with a pinch of salt—but I’m also showing you exactly how I build the vibe from the ground up. I start in Serum with chords and build it out the way these beats usually feel: super full, like a million melodies layered together. I add top notes to spice the chords up, stack more chord layers, make a lead, add low end for emotion, and lay down an arp following the chord movement. Processing-wise I don’t overdo it—my main focus is picking the right sounds, leveling, and only doing subtle EQ (maybe a little reverb here and there). After the melody is arranged, I jump into drums using my own sounds from dirkey.shop, dial in the bounce with hats and snares, then add a sub/808 with glides and sidechain it to the kick so it knocks without getting muddy. Final beat at the end—then I’m back asking y’all for more artist/producer/album recommendations for the next one.
