If you want to be one of the first to try the AI simulation builder I mentioned, join the devlin.ai waitlist here 👉 https://devlin.ai/?hi The instructional design role is changing fast… and if you’re still focused only on building courses, you might already be falling behind. In this video, I break down what’s really happening in the field right now. From rising tool costs (like Storyline) to the much bigger shift driven by AI, what does this mean for your future as an instructional designer? You’ll learn why the role is evolving beyond course creation and into something much more strategic: designing human performance solutions. I also walk through how this shift is showing up in real work, including examples from my own AI consulting journey—where the process looks surprisingly similar to instructional design, just applied in a new way. Instead of defaulting to training, we’re now asking smarter questions: What should be automated? What actually requires human skill? And where does learning truly add value? If you want to stay relevant (and valuable) in this field, this is a shift you need to understand. #instructionaldesign #elearning #aiinlearning Using the affiliate links below will help support me and the content on this channel: ***Best AI Tools for Instructional Designers*** Synthesia: https://www.synthesia.io/?via=devlin WellSaid Labs: https://www.wellsaidlabs.com/?via=devlin Descript: https://www.descript.com/?lmref=jJTSTA Jasper: https://jasper.ai/?fpr=devlin44 Riverside: https://www.riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_5&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=devlin ***Best Laptops for Instructional Designers*** Dell XPS 13: https://amz.run/6l1w 16-inch MacBook Pro: https://amz.run/6l1y Gigabyte Aero 17: https://amz.run/6l26 ***Best Books for Instructional Designers*** The Non-Designer’s Design Book: https://amzn.to/3kP0reO Map It: https://amzn.to/3f137mR eLearning and the Science of Instruction: https://amzn.to/3kNuBiF Design For How People Learn: https://amzn.to/3CLtrNM Michael Allen’s Guide to eLearning: https://amzn.to/31ZUbJB 00:00 Why instructional designers are frustrated right now 03:05 Finance Headaches 04:55 Bigger Picture 05:50 Can You Do This? 08:11 The Simulation Builder in Action 14:20 What This Means 17:29 Next Steps

About This Video

A lot of instructional designers are frustrated right now because tools like Articulate Storyline keep raising prices. But in this video, I explain why that’s not the biggest shift. The bigger shift is that we’re not going to need tools like Storyline in the same way anymore, because AI is changing what it means to be an instructional designer. More than ever, our role is moving from “designing training” to “designing human performance solutions,” where we first ask what should be automated, what actually requires human skill, and where learning genuinely adds value. I walk through examples from my own business where I’m doing what looks a lot like classic ID work—interviewing team members, identifying friction points, and mapping workflows—but instead of defaulting to training, I’m building AI-augmented systems that remove errors and save time. I share a finance automation example (plus other domains like admissions and content) and then demo an AI role-playing simulation I built in Storyline in under 10 minutes using my simulation builder. The takeaway: IDs who can propose automation + lightweight learning will drive more impact, faster, and stay way more valuable as the field evolves.
