If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to join the ID Project Lab, now’s the time — Black Friday pricing is live through December 1st, 2025. If you're ready to build real-world ID skills through hands-on projects and AI-powered simulations, join us here 👉 https://www.devlinpeck.com/id-project-lab What started as a simple idea turned into the most ambitious project I’ve ever taken on — and in this video, I’m finally pulling back the curtain on what I’ve been quietly building for over a year. If you're trying to decide whether the ID Project Lab is right for you, or you want to understand how real instructional designers actually build their skills, this walkthrough will give you the clarity you need. For the past two years, I’ve been designing something that blends the best of my master’s program, the lessons I learned designing for corporate clients, and insights from top instructional designers across the field. In this video, I share the behind-the-scenes story: the challenges, the breakthroughs, the redesigns, and why I believe this project-based, simulation-driven approach will reshape how people learn instructional design. #instructionaldesign #elearning Using the affiliate links below will help support me and the content on this channel: ***Best AI Tools for Instructional Designers*** Synthesia: https://www.synthesia.io/?via=devlin WellSaid Labs: https://www.wellsaidlabs.com/?via=devlin Descript: https://www.descript.com/?lmref=jJTSTA Jasper: https://jasper.ai/?fpr=devlin44 Riverside: https://www.riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_5&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=devlin ***Best Laptops for Instructional Designers*** Dell XPS 13: https://amz.run/6l1w 16-inch MacBook Pro: https://amz.run/6l1y Gigabyte Aero 17: https://amz.run/6l26 ***Best Books for Instructional Designers*** The Non-Designer’s Design Book: https://amzn.to/3kP0reO Map It: https://amzn.to/3f137mR eLearning and the Science of Instruction: https://amzn.to/3kNuBiF Design For How People Learn: https://amzn.to/3CLtrNM Michael Allen’s Guide to eLearning: https://amzn.to/31ZUbJB 00:00 The Idea That Started Everything 05:26 My Solution? 12:26 Competing Priorities & Progress 16:08 Project 1 Goes Live 21:25 Slowing down to speed up 22:39 The 2025 Revamp 29:37 The Final Sprint 34:22 Wrap Up

About This Video

What started as a “simple idea” turned into the most challenging thing I’ve built, and it honestly reshaped how I think about eLearning, my business, and what it should look like to learn instructional design the way real instructional designers actually work. In this video, I pull back the curtain on what I’ve been quietly building for over a year: the Instructional Design (ID) Project Lab. I share the story from the end of 2021 (when I built the Storyline Project Lab) to realizing there was still a massive gap—people could build “pretty eLearning,” but they were still struggling with analysis, stakeholder conversations, storyboarding, and solving real business problems. The big shift was moving from disjointed mini-projects to one cohesive, simulation-driven experience. You get “hired” at a fictional company (Chic Avenue), receive a training request, run a kickoff call, collect messy real-world data, and then justify learning and non-learning solutions. From there, you build the actual deliverables: needs assessment report, design doc, evaluation plan, scripts, storyboards, VILT materials, and job aids. I also talk about the hard parts: perfectionism, capacity limits (including jaw surgery), and learning to say no. Then I show what changed in the 2025 revamp—more interactivity, deeper analysis, better templates, and replacing AI talking-head videos with emails and custom GPT simulations based on student feedback.
