About This Video

In this live Q&A replay, I talk with a group of people who are trying to become instructional designers in 2025 (and a few who are already in the field). Instead of just repeating my full “how to become an ID” guide, I focus on the real questions that come up when you’re actually in the transition: how hard it is to get hired right now, what hiring managers are really looking for, and how to position your past experience so you’re not walking into interviews saying, “I have no experience.” I share what I’m seeing in the market: it’s harder than 2021, and even with a solid portfolio you might be applying for a few months—especially if you’re holding out for a high-paying remote role. But it’s still very doable if you build a decent portfolio and persist. We also dig into AI: you don’t need AI skills to break in today, but it’s quickly becoming a differentiator. I explain why I’m encouraging people to add an AI portfolio project (like a custom GPT or an AI-powered Storyline experience), and I also give my take on tools like Camtasia—use supporting tools as needed, but don’t sink months into them before you can build a strong Storyline project.
