If you’re trying to become an instructional designer, it’s really easy to get overwhelmed by all the options—master’s degrees, certificate programs, industry certifications, or just self-teaching with YouTube and AI. In this video, I break down whether an instructional design certification is actually worth it, and I share the answer I’ve given for years: you don’t need a certification to get hired. The number one thing that moves the needle is a strong portfolio that shows your skills in action—because a hiring manager can actually experience your work, not just read a line on your resume. That said, my perspective has shifted a bit after spending the past year turning my bootcamp into a licensed career school. Going through that process forced us to build a formal curriculum with standards, competencies, learning objectives, and evaluation plans—and then have independent experts review it. The big takeaway: a well-built certification can add layered credibility and confidence on top of your portfolio. It’s not the make-or-break factor, but if the program is legit and competency-based, it can become a strong talking point for interviews, LinkedIn, and even a transcript you can share when someone wants proof of what you’ve mastered.
