About This Video

In this video, I break down what your instructional design portfolio actually needs to get you hired—and what’s just wasting your time. Your portfolio doesn’t need 10 projects, but it does need to check the right boxes. I start by busting the biggest myths that keep people stuck, like “you don’t need a portfolio,” “it doesn’t have to be perfect,” and “you should show off all your skills.” Your resume tells people what you’ve done, but your portfolio shows what you can actually do—and that reduces risk for hiring managers fast. Then I walk through the simple structure that’s working right now: a clean portfolio website (with a clear value proposition), one flagship project, and a strong process write-up—plus one or two optional supporting projects. The flagship project I recommend is a story-driven, scenario-based eLearning experience built in Articulate Storyline 360 that solves a real-world problem. I show examples from real portfolios that helped people land roles recently and explain why the write-up matters almost as much as the project itself: it clarifies your role, your tools, your decisions, and the business problem you’re solving.
