In this live session, I walk you through exactly that process. In this collaborative workshop, we skip the flashy tools and instead focus on the essential, foundational steps of instructional design. Follow along as we tackle the real work—aligning learning objectives with business goals, defining success metrics, scoping content, and co-creating design documents. This is the kind of hands-on thinking that separates order-takers from strategic designers. Whether you're just breaking into the field, already working as an ID, or managing a team, this session offers real-time thinking, group input, and practical strategies you can use on your next project. About This Video

In this live workshop, I walk through what it actually looks like to design a learning experience before you ever open Storyline. And yes—this is the “boring stuff” for some people, but it’s also the work that separates order-takers from strategic instructional designers. We start with a realistic intake scenario (a training request form) and use it to identify the real business problem: IDs building training without tying it to measurable business goals. From there, I model the decision-making process in real time: clarifying what success metrics could look like (even when the scenario gets a little meta), defining a target audience, and choosing a high-level solution approach (asynchronous, VILT, or blended). Then we get into learning objectives using a more traditional structure—terminal performance objectives and enabling objectives—so you can see how to build a clean “straight arrow” from objectives to practice to assessment. I also show how I use ChatGPT as a teammate (not a replacement) and why it often struggles with objectives unless you’re very specific about job performance vs. learning activities.
