About This Video

In this video, I sit down with Daniel Guimont and unpack exactly how he transitioned from a training and fitness background into instructional design—landing a remote bilingual learning consultant role. Daniel started as a fitness instructor supporting the Canadian Armed Forces, then moved into a training specialist role in construction. When COVID hit, he started looking online, found my YouTube channel, and had that very normal “wow, that’s a big list of skills” moment—especially when it came to tools like Articulate Storyline. We talk about how he approached that skills gap, what it was like learning Storyline from scratch, and how he built portfolio projects that actually stand out. One of the biggest takeaways: he didn’t just “make a project,” he went deep—drawing and illustrating dozens of custom characters for a scenario-based course, and later building an AI-powered Storyline experience inspired by my haunted house AI workshop concept. He also shares the real numbers behind the job search: 150+ applications, around nine interview invitations, and how emotionally draining that process can be. If you’re trying to make the jump into ID, Daniel’s story is a great reminder that the portfolio is a huge differentiator—and the write-up matters just as much as the build. The project is 50%. The explanation is 50%.
