About This Video

Our industry has a bit of a bad reputation for creating boring eLearning—and I know none of us want to build courses that put people to sleep. In this video, I walk through three quick, easy ways to gamify your learning experiences so they’re more engaging, more fun, and more memorable (without needing a huge budget, advanced development skills, or a design background). The goal isn’t to “add games.” It’s to hold attention, keep learners motivated, and reinforce the learning objectives—because gamification can’t replace solid instructional design, but it can absolutely enhance it. First, I show how storytelling creates intrinsic motivation by giving learners a mission, a mystery, or a scenario with real stakes—like my Climbing to CreditVille project, where the story does a lot of the heavy lifting. Next, I cover rewards and feedback loops: progress meters, cosmetic upgrades, virtual currency, and badges that give learners that immediate “I’m making progress” feeling. Finally, I break down challenges and leaderboards—things like timed quizzes, streaks, and even “boss battles”—so practice and assessment feel less stale and more like something you want to keep playing through (and mastering).
