About This Video

Hello YouTube — tonight I’m once again wild camping on Dartmoor, this time right up on Bellstone Tor on the Bellstone Ridge, bang on the northern edge of the moor… and completely wrapped in cloud. It’s one of those classic Dartmoor flip-flop evenings where you’re boiling on the climb (I was in a t-shirt) and then you know the second you stop you’ll get cold fast. I’m back in my current go-to tent, the Naturehike Cloud Peak 2, and I was lucky with the wind for once — it was so calm I didn’t even need to peg it down while I pitched. I wasn’t out solo either. I met up with Graeme (Dartmoor Adventurer), Eden (who actually gifted me the Cloud Peak 2), and Darren from Dinky Outdoors. We had the full range of setups too — including Eden’s Hilleberg Nammatj 2 which looks like it could take a proper storm (for over a grand, I’d hope so). I got dinner on (Firepot Tuscan Stew — decent, but their chilli con carne is still my favourite) and then it was a quiet night of mist, a bit of drizzle, and me realising I’d done a rookie error by not downloading anything to watch. In the morning it was still fogged in — no sunrise, no views — but it was properly atmospheric. The Cloud Peak 2 handled it well overall, but camping in the clouds did mean moisture swirling in sideways and collecting on the mesh, which got a bit drippy. Lesson learned: it’s not always “rain” that gets you on Dartmoor. Packed up, left no trace, and headed back down through the mist.
