Good morning, YouTube. In this one I’m out on Dartmoor following the abandoned Rattlebrook Peat Railway, a proper little line that winds through the mist, hills and tors of the north-west moor. The plan was simple: stick to the old trackbed, see what views we could get (spoiler: not many), and finish at the long-abandoned ruins of the Rattlebrook Peat Works down in the valley at the foot of Amicombe Hill. It was meant to be just cloudy… but Dartmoor did what Dartmoor does best: mist, rain, clag, and a wind that made it absolutely freezing. Along the way I stop at what would’ve been the turntable area, because the bend was too tight for the train and they’d have had to rotate it manually to send it back up or down the line. I also talk through the history: opened in 1879, run by the West England Compressed Peat Company, hauling peat off the moor down towards Bridestowe to connect with the main line. At the end of the line I explore what’s left of the peat works—wet, boggy, and honestly a bit eerie, especially with my phone battery doing that weird sudden drop and the strange bones and jelly-like stuff around the ruins. In the end I sack off the muddy loop idea and just follow the railway back the way I came.
