About This Video

Good morning, YouTube. In this one I headed out for a short but properly varied 3-mile walk to explore Thurnham Castle in Kent — a 12th-century motte-and-bailey ruin that’s been abandoned for over 500 years. It’s been raining basically every day this year, so the climb up to the castle was a muddy, treacherous little scramble (going back down for the tripod was the worst bit). But the second you get up there and look out over the Weald of Kent, you instantly understand why they built a castle on that spot. Even though there’s not much left standing — a gatehouse area, a couple of pillars and a section of wall — it still feels special just being there and touching something built in the 1100s. From the castle I dropped down into the medieval village of Thurnham and visited the 13th-century Church of St Mary’s. I’m not a religious person, but I always get this calm, peaceful energy around churches, and it’s wild to think that building has been standing there for around 800 years. Then it was time for the leg-burner: a short, sharp climb up Detling Hill (honestly, staircase-steep), which I’d put up there with the steepest tors on Dartmoor for effort. I finished on the summit with cracking views out across Kent — just as the wind picked up and the rain clouds rolled in.
