I got absolutely snowed in at home, couldn’t even get the car off the drive, so I did the only sensible thing: I walked from my house in Okehampton all the way up onto Dartmoor in proper winter conditions. It was minus 2°C, blue skies one minute and a big snow cloud the next, and the plan was simple (and a bit ambitious): a freezing 20km solo mission to Yes Tor and, if I still had legs, High Willhays — the two highest tors on Dartmoor. The route takes me past familiar ground and up between West Mill Tor and Yes Tor, with the Red-a-ven Brook valley below. The boggy bits were frozen solid… until they weren’t, and I ended up reminding myself why you don’t take your eye off the ball on Dartmoor. On top of Yes Tor the cloud rolled in, the temperature dropped fast, and the cold started doing weird things to my kit — my camcorder died, and my phone basically had a meltdown and dumped its battery. But Dartmoor does what Dartmoor does: the weather shifted in seconds, the views opened up, and I pushed on to High Willhays, the highest point in the south of England. With a second wind (and my electronics mysteriously working again), I finished with a bonus stop at Fordsland Ledge for the first time on the channel — an absolute stunner in the snow, and the perfect place to sign off before a hot chocolate back home.
