About This Video

Dartmoor National Park is 365 square miles of remote, desolate, and properly beautiful landscape, and in this episode of my “Tour of the Tors” mission I head out from the Okehampton military base to tick off a new one: Ashbury Tor (tor number 71). I start by climbing East Hill for those classic views over Okehampton and North Devon, while trying not to freeze to death (it was -1 down in town… absolutely Baltic up on the moor). From there I wander into what looks like a harmless bump in the ground, only to realise I’m walking through the entrance of an Iron Age hill fort. Ashbury Tor is one of those places that’s way more than it seems. From the north it barely sticks out of the ground, but from the wooded valley to the south it turns into these towering, castle-like walls—perfect natural defenses, and you can see exactly why they built the fort here. I drop down into the valleys, cross the rivers, and then grind up a steep climb onto “Dartmoor proper” (Dartmoor doesn’t give up its views easily), before visiting Scarey Tor and finishing on Halstock Hill—complete with a quick note on the red flag system in the military training area that’s there to stop you wandering into live firing. Big views, proper winter layers, and a route that surprised me with how much history and drama is packed into a “little” tor.
