Dartmoor National Park is full of beauty, history… and a few secrets if you know where to look. In this video I spend two days out on the moor hunting for hidden letterboxes – little canisters and boxes tucked into rock piles and tors – using an OS map, compass, and a catalogue of clues. It’s basically a Victorian treasure hunt that started back in 1854, when James Perrott left a glass jar so visitors could prove they’d been there. And yes, it’s still going strong. Day one on the North Moor was a proper lesson in humility. The clues can be maddeningly vague, everyone measures “paces” differently, and I managed a spectacular run of failures before finally getting a win right near the end of the day. Finding that first stamp and logbook after hours of poking around in holes (wet knees, boggy feet, and the occasional spider) genuinely felt like striking gold. Day two was letterboxing on easy mode: I followed a charity walk set up by Ed (aka Rat Boy) to raise money for Dartmoor Search and Rescue. With better weather, better clues, and a bit of help from fellow letterboxers, I racked up a stack of stamps. The big takeaway? Letterboxing turns an ordinary hike into an addictive little adventure, and it can land you new mates as well as new locations.
