In this one I set myself a proper little Dartmoor challenge: ten tors in roughly ten miles, in absolutely savage heat. I made a very early start (left the house at quarter to five) to try and get Haytor quiet, and it paid off — having one of the most iconic, most photographed tors on Dartmoor pretty much to myself felt genuinely magical. From there it’s a big circular route taking in Saddle Tor, a steep graft up to Rippon Tor (king of this area for views), then down past Hemsworthy Gate and on to the ponies at Pil Tor and the scattered stacks of Top Tor. After that I hit the busy madness of Bonehill Rocks (not a tor, and it was rammed), then climbed up Bell Tor and on to Chinkwell Tor before heading out to Honeybag Tor — which is also where I’m planning a future wild camp with a few other Dartmoor creators. I also talk about something I bang on about for a reason: always check the Dartmoor camping map and leave no trace, because camping where you shouldn’t is exactly the sort of thing that puts wild camping at risk. The back end of the walk is where it bites: Hound Tor (epic and popular for good reason), then a proper scramble up Greator Rocks — the most technical tor climb I’ve done so far — before dropping into a shady wooded valley and slogging up through summer ferns to Smallacombe Rocks. Then it’s one last climb back towards Haytor to finish where I started, sweaty, smelly, and very happy.
