Good morning YouTube — Dave here, back out in Dartmoor again, and this time I’m exploring the far northern edge of the National Park. I park by Charlotte’s Bridge, cross the East Okement River, and then it’s straight into a proper steep fitness test up the bridleway. The climb up East Hill is tough going (my watch even told me I’d done 40 flights of stairs in about 12 minutes), but you start getting cracking views back towards Okehampton and out onto the moor towards Cosdon Beacon and the Belstone Ridge. I also bump into some baby ponies, which always makes the suffering feel worth it. From the trig point on East Hill I drop down, skirt the road near the Okehampton military camp, and hunt down Fitz’s Well Cross — complete with the pixies-and-fog legend… which, honestly, is a load of bollocks. Then it’s up onto the high moor and over to Black Down. Even though Black Down is higher than East Hill, it’s a much easier climb because you’ve already done the brutal elevation gain early doors. The weather does its usual Dartmoor thing — wind, spots of rain, then blue skies ten minutes later — which is exactly why I always say: pack for all weathers up here, because you’ll probably get all of it.
