Good morning, YouTube — it’s Dave, back out on Dartmoor again, but this time I’m keeping it right on the edge of the moor for those big, elevated views out across Devon. I start from Prewley Moor car park and head up to Sourton Tor (I’ve been here on the channel before, but it was over a year ago), with a quick look at the Sourton Ice Works — a proper fascinating bit of history where they used to freeze water in trenches and mine the ice to ship down to the coast. From Sourton Tor I follow the old Rattlebrook Railway line and push on to Great Nodden, which was a first for me. The weather does what Dartmoor always does: it teases blue skies, then dumps rain on my head about two minutes after I say we’ve avoided it — classic. Up on Great Nodden I’ve got ponies and cows for company, views both off-moor to the west and back across Dartmoor to Great Links, Arms Tor and Brat Tor, plus the River Lyd valley looking absolutely stunning. I also have a little rant about campfires: no fires on Dartmoor — it’s that simple. All in, this hike had a bit of everything: history, big views, moody cloud, a rainbow, and that proper “sunshine after the shower” finish.
