Ola, Guten Abend and Bonjour YouTube — in this one I’m back out on Dartmoor for a proper bad weather solo summit camp on Cox Tor. The forecast was sounding a bit spicy (wind off the west/northwest and rain pretty much all night), so I headed up from the Merrivale area to see if I could find anything even vaguely sheltered. Spoiler: the only flat ground up there is also the most exposed bit, and the cloud came in fast, so it turned into one of those “get the tent up and get inside” missions. This was also my first proper overnight in the Naturehike Cloud Peak 2 (kindly donated by Eden), and I put it straight into the sort of conditions you actually get on Dartmoor — wet, windy and claggy. Even without the guy lines out, it looked really sturdy and there was barely any movement inside when the gusts hit the side. I also tried out my Flextail Gear tiny pump to inflate my Andes mat (saved my lung power), cooked a Firepot chilli con carne in the vestibule (luxury for me), and then spent the night in thick fog with some properly eerie noises down in the valley. No sunrise in the morning, but the tent stayed cosy and the inner stayed basically dry — which is exactly what I wanted from it.
