I did the highest-rated walk on AllTrails in Dartmoor National Park, rated 4.9 out of 5. It’s the Hunter’s Path and Fisherman’s Path loop to Castle Drogo via Fingle Bridge. I basically rounded it up and called it “5-star hiking” because it felt like it.

Where does the Hunter’s Path and Fisherman’s Path walk start and finish?

It starts and finishes at the Fingle Bridge car park, down at the bottom of the valley. You climb hard straight away up onto the Hunter’s Path, then later drop into the gorge and follow the Fisherman’s Path back along the River Teign. You end right back at Fingle Bridge.

Is the Fisherman’s Path better than the path on the other side of the river near Castle Drogo?

For me, yes — staying on the Fisherman’s Path side was a much nicer walk. Last time I crossed over and found the second half a bit boring because the path didn’t stick close to the river. This time, being right alongside the water was way more scenic.

In this video I hit Sharp Tor first, then later I’m out on Hunter’s Tor. Both give you those big Teign Gorge views and that proper “Dartmoor proper” feeling off in the distance. Hunter’s Tor was the spot where I sat down for a bit and just soaked it all in.

How hard is this Dartmoor walk — is there a big climb?

There’s a big climb right at the start from the Fingle Bridge car park, no getting around it. But once you’re up on the Hunter’s Path it’s one of those trails where the views make the effort feel worth it. The second half by the river is much calmer and cooler in the shade.

Castle Drogo is the newest castle in England, which surprised me the first time I learned it. It was started in 1911 and finished in 1930, so it’s still nearly 100 years old but “new” by castle standards. It’s also in a cracking location overlooking the gorge.

Fingle Bridge is a stone arch pack bridge completed in the 17th century (the 1600s). It’s got triangular breakwaters to help deal with the force of the water against the pillars. It sits down in the deep Teign Gorge between the ancient hill forts of Preston Castle and Cranbrook Castle.
