About This Video

I headed out onto Dartmoor with what might be the daftest bit of kit I’ve ever trusted with a night out: a one-star rated pop-up tent from Go Outdoors that cost me £29. The plan was simple—see if it could handle Dartmoor wind, a bit of rain, and a long September night. First impressions weren’t great: the guy lines pulled the structure out of shape, there were gaps at the corners, and I could literally see daylight through the zip. It’s marketed as a two-person tent, but I’m 6 foot and my feet were touching one end while my head was nearly on the other. To give myself half a chance, I brought a couple of new bits of kit: a cheap Andes inflatable mat and an Andes bivvy bag to shove my summer sleeping bag into for extra warmth and a bit of leak insurance (thanks to George from the Dartmoor podcast for that tip). I also tried some second-hand Naturehike down booties for £7, because my last camp was freezing and winter’s on the way. The tent did leak a bit and space was a nightmare—no vestibule, boots inside stinking the place out, and hardly any headroom. But I got through the night, woke up to a cracking Dartmoor morning, and took in those misty views from Roos Tor. Final verdict: fun experiment, wouldn’t recommend the tent—especially not for beginners.
