In this video I review what I genuinely think is the cheapest brand new hiking backpack you can buy in the UK: the Keep Walking Hong Jing from eBay. I paid £7.50 with free delivery, and before I filmed anything I actually took it out on four hikes because I can’t stand those “unbox it and review it” videos. I head up to a windy spot near Tours End Tor and go through what surprised me, what I liked, and what really put me off. The big headline is the “40L” claim. In my experience, there’s no chance it’s 40 litres—it feels more like a 20L daypack, and it was bulging with my normal Dartmoor autumn day-hike kit. Feature-wise, I do like a few things: a handy front stash pocket for wet waterproofs, a little snack pocket, and mesh side pockets that work well with the compression strap for carrying my tripod. But the cons scream cheap: thin shoulder straps, flimsy zips, no waist strap, weird faux-leather bits, and “features” like bungee cords and bottom straps that look like they’re there for show rather than actually working. My takeaway: it’s not terrible, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a proper hiking backpack if you hike a lot. For £7.50 it’s fine for occasional walks, dog walking, or as a kids’ first backpack where it doesn’t matter if it gets wrecked.
