Good morning, YouTube — it’s Dave here, and for once I’m not on Dartmoor. In this video I head over to Exmoor National Park for my first ever visit, with a plan to bag the area’s big high points: Dunkery Beacon (the highest point on Exmoor and in Somerset), Great Rowbarrow, and Dunkery Hill. I start from Webber’s Post car park, follow Dicky’s Path through a really lovely wooded section, then get into the main climb as the temperature shoots up way earlier than forecast. Add in absolutely relentless flies (worse than Dartmoor, honestly) and me feeling a bit rough with a tickly throat… it was a proper “earn your views” kind of morning. Dunkery Beacon delivers big time — cracking views over the Bristol Channel and, on a clear-ish day, you can even pick out Wales. From there I head to Great Rowbarrow, and even though it’s fairly flat, getting up onto the cairn makes a huge difference for the views and it’s where I finally manage to film deer after missing them so many times in past videos. The second half of the walk is where it gets spicy: I try to loop Dunkery Hill using a trail that’s “clear as day” on the OS map… but basically doesn’t exist in real life. I get a bit lost, slog through horrible ground, and I’m honest about it: I wouldn’t recommend doing that loop — if you want Dunkery Hill, do it as an out-and-back from the road on the nicer track.
