About This Video

Today I’m reviewing Slate Digital FG-X2 (FGX2), the updated version of their FG-X limiter, and I’m mainly looking at what’s actually useful in a real session: workflow, metering, and how hard you can push it before it starts falling apart. I walk through the UI differences between Easy and Advanced mode, and I show why I genuinely like the metering layout—gain reduction, LUFS metering, and even mid/side views. I also point out you can collapse the extra meters if you want it super minimal, or expand the whole interface to get more room to work. From there I run an audio example and start pushing level (around +2 dB) while using Constant Gain Monitoring so I’m not getting fooled by “louder = better.” We get into the FG-Comp section (clean, clear, not really adding audible harmonic grit to my ears), the transient/detail controls (low punch around 120 Hz and detail around 7 kHz), and how the presets can be a little aggressive depending on the track. I ended up watching the gain reduction needle and dialing release manually so it bounces with the drums, and even at around -5 dB of reduction it stayed surprisingly controlled. It doesn’t replace everything I’ve got (I still love Ozone), but FG-X2 is definitely a contender if you’re shopping for a limiter.
