About This Video

What’s happening guys, you’re here with Nate (N828) — CROSSBEATS PRODUCTION. In this video I’m testing the UAD Spark API 2500 bus compressor inside Studio One 5 and breaking down exactly why I picked it for this hip hop mix. I play the track without the plugin first, then bring the 2500 in so you can hear what it’s doing on the mix buss — mainly that snap on the transients and the extra punch it can pull out of the drums without wrecking the vibe. The big takeaway is how I like to run the API 2500 in a parallel-style setup right on the buss: mostly dry with some wet blended in (around a 45% wet mix in my case). When you go full mix, it can start to suffocate the track, and that’s not what I’m after — I want it breathing, alive, and still full. I also show the general approach I use (including the “start at 12 o’clock” idea from the hardware/manual), why I prefer hard knee, loud tone, and the old feedback mode, plus how I keep it 100% linked and use the shaping filter. I’m only grabbing about 1–2 dB of compression, but it’s enough to get that attack I want.
