About This Video

I wanted to see if I could make the exact same horror game idea better than AI. I already had ChatGPT code a horror game from scratch (dark environment, enemy, jump scare… the basics), and it worked, which was honestly annoying. So I went back, looked at the original, and tried to remake it in a way that actually feels like a game instead of “walk around and eventually get jump scared.” The big twist: the original was 3D, and I don’t really make 3D games, so I rebuilt the whole thing in 2D using GameMaker. I started with the essentials: a player sprite, movement, then a forest environment using free itch.io assets. It didn’t look scary at first, so I leaned on effects and a proper lighting system to push it into horror territory. Then I coded an enemy AI that patrols random points until you get close, and then it hunts you. After that, I upgraded the jump scare, swapped in better assets, and finally added actual gameplay: survive 10 minutes in the forest while the enemy chases you (yes, I reused my “survive in the woods” concept because it works). To top it off, I added an upgrade system so you can eventually grab a gun and fight back, because waiting to lose is not gameplay.
