In this video I review the Topping D50 III DAC (yes, the “D50 third version”) together with the matching A50 III headphone amp stack, and I explain why this little combo can be a small but real sonic uplift for a desktop setup. The D50 III is built like a tank for the size—solid metal, no flex—and it’s honestly one of the prettiest compact stacks I’ve had on my desk. I also talk about the weird-but-brilliant Bluetooth remote: once you press a button it connects via Bluetooth, so you don’t even need line of sight. Feature-wise, I go through the outputs (RCA single-ended and TRS balanced) and why TRS is uncommon in audiophile land but super common in studio gear. You can run the stack via RCA or TRS, and in my experience TRS balanced sounded slightly better, just keep in mind cables can be less common. I also cover the inputs (USB being the most important, plus optical, coax, and Bluetooth with LDAC), the 12V trigger out, and the fact that coax/optical still need USB-C power. Sound-wise, I describe the D50 III as natural and transparent, with slightly warm bass and mids, full treble extension that brings detail, and a soundstage that’s wide and holographic for the price. The biggest shocker for me was the lack of background noise even in a big speaker system where the power amp runs at maximum volume—using the DAC’s pre/volume made it a very practical desktop control center. If you don’t need to power headphones, you don’t really need the A50 III—just the DAC can be enough.
