About This Video

In this video I review the FiiO FT7 outdoors (yeah… I grabbed the wrong bag, so no “jingling in my hands” shots), and I go deep into what makes this $699 open-back planar magnetic flagship special. The FT7 is built like something you’d expect to cost around a grand: super premium feel, excellent comfort, lots of space inside the cups, and thick, soft pads that clamp naturally without creating hot spots. It’s also extremely acoustically transparent—so transparent that you’ll hear your room like you’re not wearing headphones at all, which is awesome for realism, but it means you’ll want a quiet space if you want to enjoy it properly. Sound-wise, FT7 is basically a vocal headphone with superb midrange: clean, detailed, and very pleasing for both male and female voices. It’s slightly V-shaped with a dip around 1 kHz, and it’s smooth on the attack—never hard on the edges—while still being technical with strong layering and instrument separation. Bass has warmth and impact in mid/upper bass, but sub-bass is rolled off (it really starts to come in around ~40 Hz), so if you live on EDM/dubstep you should know that up front. I also compare it to HIFIMAN Arya Organic (the most requested comparison): FT7 is warmer, thicker, smoother, and more focused, while Arya Organic is more expanded, brighter, and more of a “revealer.” Finally, even though FT7 is easy to drive, it’s a blade that cuts both ways—source quality matters a lot, and a powerful, controlled DAC/amp helps it sound its best. Overall, it’s fully recommended, with clear pros and cons depending on what you listen to and what you drive it with.
