Today I’m reviewing what a lot of people call the best headphone ever made: the HIFIMAN Susvara Unveiled. It’s an $8,000 flagship, and yes, it’s literally “open by design” because the cups are removed and the planar driver is exposed. That also means a couple of practical things: you cannot listen with the protective covers on, and you get basically zero passive isolation—my voice sounds the same as if I’m not wearing them. Comfort is excellent, similar to the original Susvara, but the Unveiled feels a bit lighter, with slightly deeper/thicker pads and (in my opinion) a more beautiful brown-and-silver look. The big story is how it sounds and how it behaves with power. The Unveiled is much easier to drive than the original Susvara—about half the power—so it’s more convenient and even works from some higher-end portables like the iBasso DX320 MAX Ti, Cayin C1000T, Lotoo PAW GT2, and iBasso DX340. But that sensitivity comes with a warning: don’t assume it needs “Susvara power,” because you can clip the driver and burn it if you dump 4–6W into it. Sonically, it’s the most detailed, transparent, fastest headphone I’ve heard—more forward and slightly brighter than the original, while the original stays wider, more laid-back, darker, and a bit bassier. For me, I’ve been reaching for the Unveiled more because it checks every box without the stress.
