In this video I review the FiiO S15, and I call it a true “do it all” streamer because it’s basically a fast Android 12 mini-computer locked inside a seriously good-sounding DAC / preamp chassis. I go through what you get in the box (remote, SSD cage, trigger cable, Type-C cable, even a spare fuse), then I explain the core idea: you can use the S15 either as a full DAC feeding an amp via balanced / RCA line outs, or as a digital streamer/transport using HDMI ARC, I2S, AES/EBU, optical and coax. What surprised me most is the speed and usability. Most streamers feel sluggish and make you want to grab your phone instead, but the S15’s Snapdragon 660 makes it lightning fast, and the touchscreen experience is genuinely like using a smartphone. Sonically, as a DAC it’s one of the most organic, natural, smooth and open-sounding FiiO units I’ve heard, with lush vocals, excellent separation, and deep punchy bass (that AK “velvet” vibe). I also tested it with sensitive amps and mono blocks and got no background noise. I do point out the downsides: it’s large, it runs warm, and I really wish it had a USB digital output on the back. Still, at around $1,000, it’s more versatile than many streamers that offer far less.
