About This Video

In this video I’m taking you along for a very real day as a single foster mom in Los Angeles when I get the call about a second newborn placement. At the time I already have my first “potato boy” (Buster—nickname only, because I don’t share identifying info about him, his case, or his family). My agency asks if I’m open to taking another tiny baby who’s still at the hospital, and of course I say yes. I talk through the big unknowns—like the goal of placing him with his older siblings if possible—and how that likely means this placement could be short-term, which I’m totally okay with. I’ll love him for as long as he needs me to love him. You’ll see me run around trying to do my actual job while also prepping: setting up the second crib, getting the bassinet ready, washing bottles, and packing a diaper bag. I also share what I’m trying with Buster’s bottles and cups (open-mouth cups, struggling with straw cups, and really trying to avoid sippy cups). The night ends with a late “baby Uber” delivery after paperwork delays, meeting the social worker at the curb, and finally welcoming my new little guy—Dash—home with hospital-provided supplies and 24 hours of formula so I can figure out the next steps in the morning.
