So your ficus is thriving… but it’s giving you that single-stem look and you’re dying for it to branch—without notching or chopping it down. In this video, I show you my foolproof ficus branching hack that requires zero cutting, and I’ve had a 100% success rate with it. The whole idea is simple plant science: I “trick” the plant into thinking it partially toppled over, like what can happen in a storm, which shifts hormones and encourages new branches to form lower on the stem so they can grow upward. Here’s exactly what I do: I pick the side where I want the new branch, then I tilt the plant at least 45° so that side faces up. I prop it securely with spare pots (or whatever I have on hand), make sure that upward-facing side is getting good light, and then I wait. In my experience, my Ficus elastica Ruby started branching in about 4 weeks, while my more mature Tineke took about 7 weeks—and my Tineke actually pushed more than one new branch.
