About This Video

Aloha you guys—this is my first repotting session of the year, and we’re kicking things off with a plant that’s been on my list for a while: my Epipremnum ‘Marble Queen’ (one of the first plants I ever got when I started my plant journey). I’ve had her almost 5 years, and because I don’t have the space to keep sizing up the pot, I’m doing what I’ve done before: a root prune and a repot back into the same size. The twist this time is I’m switching her into a clear pot, because I just like being able to see what’s going on in there. In this video I walk you through how I get a seriously rootbound plant out of a pot (butter knife trick included), how I approach root pruning without going overboard (generally aiming for about a third), and what I do when the “same size” pot still doesn’t want to cooperate because of shape differences. You’ll see me do the straight bottom chop first, then decide in real time to shave the sides to fix a circumference issue—because sometimes you just learn as you go and roll with the punches. I also talk through why I’m sticking with my basic mix (potting soil + perlite/pumice) since the plant’s been doing fine, plus how I work soil into tight gaps with a chopstick when there’s not much room to backfill.
