In this planty update, I’m taking you around my house (with Theo, Scooter, and George making appearances) to show what’s thriving, what’s struggling, and what made me extremely unhappy this week. I start with my imports and recent additions—like my variegated syngonium white butterfly, a few Hoyas that are finally taking off, and my anthuriums under my Soltech Grove bar light. I also share little care notes as we go, like why I trimmed older damaged leaves, what lighting setups are working (hello, southeast and west-facing kitchen windows), and how I’m comparing mixes like my epiphyte mix versus my forest floor mix on the same anthurium hybrid. Then we get into the “bad and buggy” portion. My Monstera albo ‘White Tiger’ was shipped with rust (yep—fungal rust), so I had to cut off the worst leaves/sections and I’m documenting a full treatment process for a separate video. And unfortunately, that wasn’t my only monstera drama: I confirmed spider mites (microscope confirmed) on my El Choco Red and my big, beautiful green monstera—plus I spotted at least one mite on a favorite anthurium in my office. I walk through my immediate response: shower rinses, removing dead sheathing where mites can hide, and why I’m leaning on beneficial bugs for the big plants I can’t easily spray down.
