About This Video

Have you ever struggled to get cuttings to root in water, or you want those big, beautiful leaf size-ups without dealing with a moss pole? In this video, I walk you through air layering—my favorite “grow roots before you cut” propagation method. The whole idea is simple: you encourage roots to form at a node while the plant is still attached to the mother plant, so it’s still getting water and nutrients the entire time. That means less chance of failure, and it’s an amazing chop-and-extend option for climbing plants. I cover what plants air layering works for (you need nodes above the soil line—otherwise you’re looking at division), the best timing (you can do it year-round, but it’s usually faster in spring/summer), and exactly what you need: a healthy plant, a substrate, and either plastic wrap + twist ties or, my recommendation, air layering pods. I show both setups step-by-step, how thick to pack your substrate, how to pick a good cut point (I stick to about 6–18 inches of foliage above), and how to keep things evenly damp while roots develop (typically 3–8 weeks). Then I show how to cut, pot up, and why air layering helps new growth keep its maturity instead of regressing like some other propagation methods.
