In this video I’m in Seoul talking about one of the most underrated budget stays for solo travelers in Korea: goshiwons (aka goshi-tel / one-room-tel). These are tiny single-occupancy rooms that were originally made for students studying for exams, so they’re usually low-rent with shared facilities like a kitchen, laundry, and sometimes bathrooms (unless you specifically find a room with a private bathroom like I did). I walk you through what a goshiwon actually is, what the common set-up looks like, and why I chose this over spending 2.5 weeks in hostel dorm bunk beds. I also share my exact process for finding and booking: using GoshiPages (easiest for foreigners), using Naver Maps to search “goshiwon,” and why I booked a hostel for my first two nights so I could tour rooms in person. Seeing it in real life matters—photos can be outdated, room sizes are hard to judge, and the “6-minute walk to the subway” might secretly be uphill or miserable. Finally, I break down my pros/cons after staying in one: yes it’s small and the facilities aren’t always fancy, but having my own space is everything. I share pricing too—my place was 25,000 won/night (400,000 won total) plus 10,000 won to rent bedding, and I talk about how things like windows, private bathrooms, and hidden fees can change the total a lot.
