About This Video

Good morning from Shanghai—this is basically my first time here (at least in my adult memory), so I was super excited but also a bit scared because it’s summer. I skipped dinner the night before, so I was starving, and I took a 1-hour train ride from my hotel into the city to start my 24-hour layover adventure around the Wukang Building area. The weather started nice and windy… then turned crazy sunny, and I was literally sweating everywhere. I hate summer so much, so yes, the umbrella was out the whole day. I spent the day doing what I always do on layovers: eat, walk, and explore until my legs give up. I hunted for local Shanghai food and tried a Shanghai-style noodle with pork, xiaolongbao, and the biggest shumai ever—turns out it’s stuffed with glutinous rice, which is so different from the Malaysia version. I also went to 13 de Marzo for a super refreshing grape drink (mainly because it comes with the cutest teddy bear), browsed cute shops like Wiggle Wiggle, checked out discounted mini makeup, and did a little Uniqlo stop for a not-see-through plain tee. To cool down, I ended up at DQ for a Matcha Max and it was honestly 10/10—strong matcha, sandy matcha bits, and exactly what I needed in the heat. I wrapped up with Shanghai pan-fried dumplings (shengjianbao-style), and the pork one was so juicy the soup literally burst in my mouth. After 14,000 steps and an hour train back, I was done for the day—but I’d 100% recommend coming for the local food because it’s affordable, huge portions, and so good.
