Contact me via email ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ After over 15 years as a professional freelance commercial film editor, I've realized that the most important factor for success—and one that is often overlooked—is your personality and people skills. I know many editors with incredible talent and portfolios, but they struggle because they are difficult to work with, poor communicators, or have a huge ego. When a client hires you for a big project, they are looking for someone who is reliable and pleasant to be around. My Freelance Philosophy: Be Interested (3:09): I approach every person assuming they can teach me at least one thing. This genuine curiosity helps fill silent gaps and makes me likable. Give Confidence (4:22): Showing that you are relaxed lets the client know you're in control, which in turn helps them relax—critical for big international campaigns. Manage Your Ego (5:23): I have no problem executing a client's idea, even if I suggested it, or letting them take credit. I don't need the credit. I will offer my concerns, but I won't flat-out refuse to work (6:20). Read the Room (7:31): Sometimes, you must execute a "terrible idea" so the client can realize their mistake. I don't mind being the "fall guy" and saying, "Maybe I misunderstood," to keep the atmosphere casual and avoid conflict. The key is finding the balance between showcasing your expertise and being a collaborative, egoless, and genuinely interested partner. This makes people feel like they made a good decision hiring you. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 0:00 - 15+ years as a freelance film editor 0:36 - The most important factor: Personality and people skills 1:16 - Why better editors struggle (Lack of communication, difficult to work with) 2:34 - The value of being reliable and pleasant 3:09 - Approaching life with genuine interest in people 4:22 - The importance of being relaxed (Gives the client confidence) 4:52 - Younger freelancers lacking communication skills 5:23 - The power of toning back your ego 5:52 - How to offer advice without rejecting the client's idea 6:48 - The balance: Skill vs. Listening to the client 7:31 - The trick: Sometimes clients need to make their own mistakes 7:57 - Being the "fall guy" and apologizing to keep it casual 8:56 - Don't confuse this with "sucking up" or "brown-nosing" 10:04 - Final advice: Be interested (Life becomes more enjoyable) 11:04 - Outro ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
