I recently snagged a free month of HBO Max just for this series, and it is easily one of the best things I’ve watched in 2026. Centered on Sir Duncan the Tall (a "Hedge Knight") and his witty squire Egg, the show strips away the overpowered "superhero" tropes we see too often today and gives us a protagonist who is beautifully flawed, naive, and relatable. Unlike characters like Captain Marvel or some versions of Superman, Sir Duncan isn't the smartest or the best fighter, but he has the heart and spirit that makes you truly root for him. I break down why the "old style" of storytelling—the classical Hero's Journey—works so much better here than in the flashy, high-stakes battles of other modern series. The chemistry and banter between Dunk and Egg are top-tier, and the casting is flawless across all eight episodes. The pacing of this season was perfect, though I’m already worried about the wait for Season 2—we need them to film fast before the young actors grow up! If you have any recommendations for what else I should catch on HBO Max before my month expires (maybe those Harry Potter extended editions?), let me know in the comments. And if you missed my rant on why I disliked the new Superman movie, check that out next! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 00:00 - Why I Got HBO Max 01:09 - Dunk the Tall's Backstory 02:57 - Duncan and Egg's First Meeting 03:24 - The Problem with Modern "Super" Heroes 05:59 - Relatability & Character Flaws 08:03 - The Best On-Screen Duo 09:45 - Season 1 Review & Pacing 10:56 - Help Me Find My Next Watch! 11:45 - Outro & Final Recommendation ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
