Moving from the reverb-heavy living room to the controlled environment of a car, I’m putting the internal microphones to the test at a distance of about 45cm. As a filmmaker, adjusting to the "infinite focus" and fixed-focus nature of an action camera is a challenge, but there is a surprising amount of freedom in not having to worry about autofocus. In this video, I dive into why the lack of autofocus and the poor close-focusing distance are actually liberating for a creator. We look at the footage from my boxing training, all shot on Auto Shutter and Auto ISO, to see how the DJI Nano handles fast movement and changing environments. Despite the physical limitations of the small sensor, the simplicity of the device allows for creative camera movements and "magnet-mounted" shots that you just can't get with a traditional setup. Finally, we discuss the importance of dedicated devices in 2026. Just like I prefer the ROG Ally for gaming over a smartphone, I prefer a dedicated vlogging tool that doesn't distract me with notifications. The DJI Nano isn't the most capable camera on paper, but its simplicity is its superpower.
