What's up, my wild runners 🏃? I recently accomplished the biggest challenge of my life: Running one marathon in each country of the European Union in two months. How does an amateur runner with no real experience run 24 marathons in 2 months? And that in 24 different countries? It's not as hard as you think once you unleash your mind and start believing in yourself and the people around you. I started with the question "What if?" What if I could pull this off? If you break down a big challenge like this in digestible steps, it doesn't seem impossible. 3 marathons per week equals 126,56km, or 78.67 miles. Not something far out of my comfort zone. Sure, not easy, but doable. Running a marathon solo? Done it many times. can I recover fast enough from these long runs, let's find out! So I started training, and I knew it all depended on injury prevention. In the past, I have fallen victim of the "no pain, no gain" mentality, overdoing my training too quickly and getting injured. For this challenge, it would be a complete dealbreaker, especially knowing that the trip itself would not be cheap. So with Enzo and Marcel as a team, and a PowerPoint presentation on my iPad, I started talking to brands if they could sponsor and help us. Next thing you know, we have a van (Thank you Camperboys), a Nutrition Partner (Thank you MaxiNutrition), shoes (Thank you Altra) running clothes (thank you Compressport), and a battery system to charge our stuff on the go (thank you EcoFlow) and recovery gear (thank you Reboots, and Blackroll) in our corner with us. Very excited and impatient, I continued applying my training plan day after day, but as the trip came closer and closer, I started becoming overwhelmed with planning. I had never traveled to most of these countries and didn't know anything about where I was going to run the marathon, sleep, eat, etc. It's fair to say that the last month of my training was stressful for me, and I actually managed to get sick just before the start of the challenge (mind-body connection 🤝). The first week of running was chaotic. We tried adapting to living together in such a small place, keeping an eye on my injuries, recovery, etc., and traveling through three countries every week. It was one of the best experiences of my life, and I believe I can speak for Marcel and Enzo here as well. What an adventure! We wild camped in the most beautiful wildernesses of Europe, ran magnificent trails, and met extraordinary people. Time flew past us.. and after three weeks we could not believe that only three weeks had passed. It felt like multiple years of travel and adventure. That's what happens, when you're truly living, and not bored.
