About This Video

In this video I’m cracking into the Bernheim 20th Anniversary Limited Edition — the Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey that’s 10 years old and bottled at 115 proof. I’ve been excited about this one and honestly, part of what pulled me in was the presentation: that copper/brass-looking emblem and the whole “special release” vibe. I found it for about $85 before tax (a little over $90 after), and I went straight from the bottle to the glass to see how the nose opened up. On the nose I’m getting a butterscotch-forward profile with baking spices, plus this candy-like butterscotch/vanilla vibe (that soft chewy kind). There’s also a tiny hint of herbal mint way in the background and some nice char/wood sitting over the top. On the palate, it comes in sweet and spicy — more baking spice than rye spice — with caramel/butterscotch/vanilla, a little tingle in the throat at 115 proof, and then a slight bitter note on the finish that keeps it from climbing higher for me. I rate it a solid to mid-low B tier. It’s good, I’ve got no real problems with it at the price point, and I’m happy to have it on the shelf — but that hint of bitterness at the end is the thing that holds it back.
