About This Video

I just finished up a very amateur inside storage solution for our Tusca HitchHiker, and I wanted to share what I put together since the Tusca is such a basic platform that’s meant to be built out however you want. If you’re a cabinet maker or carpenter, don’t worry—your job is safe. I’m not showing a step-by-step build because I know there are better ways to do it, and I definitely didn’t do a perfect job, but this setup is going to suit my needs on trail rides and overlanding trips. The build is two mirrored units made from 1/2-inch birch plywood with 1x2 material in the corners, all screwed together. I left the bottom off the boxes for weight savings, and each side gets a cubby plus a shelf with about a 1.5-inch lip to help keep things from sliding around while driving. Inside the Tusca, I’m running a full residential mattress (not RV size), which leaves extra space up front—so these units wedge in against the front wall in front of the mattress. In the end, we pushed the shelves to the sides and used the middle gap for a removable kitchen storage container, which gave us even more usable storage.
