In this video, I’m out on a steep, narrow hiking trail at Monserat Mountain Preserve in Fallbrook, California (just outside Temecula) to clear my head and think through what the next Venture rig should be. I also want to hear from you—would you rather tackle a trail like this on foot, in a truck/SUV, or on an adventure bike? I’m doing this handheld and a bit out of breath, but it felt like the right place to talk through the decision instead of just sitting in a driveway. I lay out the four criteria I’m using to choose our next off-road adventure rig: price, vehicle size, ease of maintenance/mods, and long-term reliability. Budget matters a lot—I’d prefer not to finance a rig, then turn around and spend even more money modifying it and risking trail damage. Size is a big deal too; after owning both a 2-door and 4-door Wrangler, I still prefer the 2-door off-road because it feels more nimble and easier to place on the trail. I also talk through why a pickup could make sense (especially if we sell our Tusca teardrop) and why a dual sport motorcycle is tempting for price, fun factor, and portability—while still being mindful of my back surgery history.
