In this first-ever YouTube live stream, I’m doing a quick “signal and setup” test from an RV show in Temecula, California—because next week I want to try going live from Overland Expo SoCal. I’m filming on my phone with whatever reception I can get, so you’ll see me bouncing between sun glare and shade, flipping the camera around, and generally trying not to ramble (even though I totally do). I walk through a couple of off-road-style van builds, including a Mercedes Sprinter and a Ram, and I show what the interiors look like—beds, wet bath, kitchen setup, storage, and the typical swivel front seats. While I’m checking out these builds, I’m also thinking out loud about a question I keep coming back to: are a lot of these off-road van builds overbuilt and overpriced for what most people actually do with them? I’m not knocking anyone—if you’ve got one and you love it, that’s what matters—but I do wonder how many owners are using the full potential of the lift and tires versus mostly running graded gravel and forest roads. That ties into where our channel is headed, our ongoing rig search, and how the off-road industry (and the creators that inspired me during the COVID shutdowns) has evolved toward bigger tires, bigger power, and more extreme builds.
