About This Video

The search for the next Venture rig took me somewhere you might not expect—back to two wheels. When I was 14, my first real off-road experience wasn’t in a Jeep or a truck, it was on a dirt bike. So with this whole “what’s the next rig?” question still wide open, I went to check out dual sport motorcycles as a street-legal option for off-road exploration. I haven’t ridden in a long time, so I’m weighing the real pros and cons of trading four wheels for two. Because the music in the shop was loud, I didn’t record audio, but I spent most of my time looking at the Yamaha WR125 and the Kawasaki KLX 230S. I know plenty of riders will say they’re underpowered, but my big constraints are price and weight. For just under $7,000, I can get something brand new and reliable, instead of gambling on a used Jeep or truck at the same price point. The other huge factor is portability—using a hitch carrier, I could haul a smaller dual sport with my Renegade to places like Colorado and ride there, instead of piling highway miles and wear onto the same vehicle I’m trying to wheel. I’m still checking out trucks, but this visit gave me a lot to think about—especially after seeing a 1992 Wrangler sell for just over $5,000 on Bring a Trailer.
