About This Video

In this video, I’m showing you how to create your own “free cloud storage” or simple NAS using something you might already have—your WiFi router’s USB port. Most people only use a router to connect phones, tablets, and laptops to the internet, but if your router has a USB port (not all of them do), you can plug in a USB stick or even a hard drive and share that storage to every device connected to your network. I’m using my Netgear RAX20 as the example, and I walk you through checking your router’s web interface and finding the USB storage/ReadySHARE section. I also tested it with a 1TB laptop HDD I pulled from an old broken laptop, using a SATA-to-USB adapter, and it works great for basic file sharing. From my Windows laptop, I show how to access the share using the Run command, create folders, and then map it as a network drive so it shows up automatically in “This PC.” Transfer speed in my test was around 25 MB/s, which is still cool for backups and moving files around. The big takeaway: use the resources around you—if you need extra storage but don’t want to pay for cloud fees or buy a dedicated NAS, your router’s USB port can be a simple solution.
